Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass has the best rate of long-term success of any bariatric procedure. It addresses the need for weight loss in 4 unique ways, allowing patients to shed up to 60 or 70% of their body fat. The rate of success is bolstered by the use of laparoscopes, which are surgical tools that allow surgeons to complete complex procedures through a series of small incisions. That means faster recovery and better outcomes.

It works by separating most of the stomach and some of the small intestine from the rest of the GI tract, effectively “bypassing” these sections. It shrinks the stomach area to about the size of a tablespoon, meaning patients would be compelled to eat their food only a tablespoon at a time. It also reduces the amount of the small intestine where calories would be absorbed by the body.

  • There Are 4 Benefits to Gastric Bypass Surgery
  • Dumping Syndrome: Physiologic feedback that is caused by the presence of concentrated sugars in the small intestine. This includes pie filling, chocolate, candy, cake, and other common desserts. After gastric bypass, patients experience nausea, diarrhea, and elevated heart rates when eating these foods, deterring them from poor eating habits.
  • Malabsorption in the Small Intestine: Less calories are absorbed by the body, leading to a “lower” calorie count for every meal. This is a result of bypassing 150cm of small intestine, where many digestic enzymes are located.
  • Less Stomach Volume: Because the stomach is partitioned, patients feel fuller after far less food. The stomach, which is often reduced to the size of a tablespoon, allows patients to naturally limit their food intake without the need for willpower or dieting.
  • Smaller Intestinal Opening: A smaller opening means food passes more slowly into the intestine. By limiting the volume of food that can be passed, patients feel fuller sooner and are forced to eat more slowly. This also contributes to a more effective sense of satisfaction, which is the mental component of fullness.
